I wrote the following in reply to an overjoyed Pakistani student who got his local University connected to an ADSL line:
Until a month ago I had Verizon DSL with 768 Kbps down, that's logically around 90KB/sec. Where as now I have a 9000 Kbps cable with OOL... which translates into an amazing logically 1.1MB/sec (although I usually download at around 600KB/sec).
In contrast, Pakistan's entire submarine-based SMW3 connection is 155Mbit (i.e. OC-3). Which means all of Pakistan has a total bandwidth of 189 Mbit/s (155 sea-based + 34 satellite based). Which further means that all of Pakistan shares the same amount of bandwidth as approximately 21 Optimum Online cable subscribers. That's called the great bandwidth divide... :(
