The Trackback Wars?

I'd like to thank Doug, Mike and especially girlie for being sensible about the whole issue... and pointing out how trackbacking was meant to be used the way I do it.

Mr. Fisher has apologized for his rudeness (which unfortunately I have already deleted). I do understand his and other people's concerns of how trackbacking could be turned into spammers paradise once they get a hold of the technology. Of course that seems like a probability, but we've already learnt so much about email spam that we'd hopefully be able to distinguish between a geniune blog and a commercial spammer selling prescription-free viagra when it would come to blogging in the future. Or why not have a personally moderated trackback system?

What I don't understand is how can you categorize my behavior as spamming when I am trackbacking to a post that shares the same exact subject. But as they say, different schools of thoughts exist to define what trackbacking means... one says it should only be used to comment on a specific entry and the other uses it to link together entries on the same topic.

Anyway, just to bring both view points togethers, I've decided to install the PingedURLs plugin for MT on girlie's suggestion to provide public links back to those that I trackback from. Although it still doesn't mean that my entries will mention the ones they are trackbacking, but atleast they will provide a list of URLs that they've ping along with excerpts, much like the original trackback listing page.

The beta-blogger (another blogger that my blackout entry originally trackbacked to and got later removed from) made an entry about it too... but he seemed a little confused. He did mention Joi in his entry - and used part of his original text - but he didn't mention his closing lines on the great trackbacking debate, which go like this...

"Obviously, if it were spam or a link to a unrelated topic, I would erase the trackback, but it is a link to a legitimate entry about the same topic and I wouldn't think about erasing it."

And that's exactly where I stand.

TrackBacking is not spamming but it has certain disadvantages as well, which cannot be ignored.
