AOL's new ad campaign is dumber than their actual service. In the tv spots, they show this crowd of tens of thousands outside the AOL office who want to respond to AOL's appeal for suggestions to improve the internet. Hello? AOL doesn't control the internet, hell, almost all of their "web content" isn't even accessible online. You actually have to use their stupid software to get access to their own tiny little version of the internet, so it's more like an intranet.
So, yet again I feel sorry for people who still think that AOL is the internet. Unfortunately, people are getting smarter as we move to total broadband, and the shift in AOL's advertising suggests that their old scare than broadband from Cable and DSL providers is bare and unsafe, is not working. I used to laugh when they pitched their "AOL for Broadband" as a neccesity if you subscribe to broadband. But the poor bastards have no other choice, they member base has been shrinking for years.
