War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds - Official Logo It's been 4 months since I signed up for the War of the Worlds Webmasters Program, and years since I've been following the project. But as always, I've taken my time to blog this. My lateness can be judged by the fact that I've already purchased my tickets at Fandango (using promo codes of course) and there are already reviews out there from people who've attended special screenings.

I might actually be a bigger fan of Spielberg and Cruise that I am of Lucas, mostly because Lucas took a long break from film making during the time I was growing up, while S & C came out with quality motion pictures year and year again. So besides 'King Kong', 'War of the Worlds' is my most anticipated movie of 2005 (sorry Star Wars fans!). The best thing that I like about this movie - which I am sure will be noted in the 'official' reviews - is that it's not from the savior's prospective. Tom Cruise's character is like one of those extra in Independence Day, Armageddon, Deep Impact or even Mars Attacks! that the audiences never really cared for whether they live or die a horrible death. Now that's different. The protagonist is not a brainiac who can infect an alien computer with a virus and baffle the generals in White House with his outrageous and ingenious ideas of how to deal with a global catatrophy. He's just trying to protect his children by getting away from it all.

I read this article about the movie's production in Wired, and it really showed how this was a new experience for Spielberg, who used pre-wiz technology for the first time - using an AMD powered Acer Ferrari Laptop. Anyway, this movie is really important for both names behind it, especially after their last effort 'Minority Report' enjoyed only a mild success, although I really liked it.

Let's hope its a huge success and able bring back some lost bucks for Hollywood, so they can blame piracy or downloading for their worst season in two decades. Personally though, I'm just hoping that I love it, otherwise it'll be another 'The Village' for me, where I follow a movie's production for year only to be disappointed in the end.
