This storm has effected everyone. Gas was already expensive, but this disaster has worstened the situation. Looking at regular for $2.89 (and that's in NJ, with it's lower taxes compared to NY), I asked the Haitian attendant if I could get half and half, water and gas. Unfortunately, only I got the joke, along with an almost $40 charge to fill the tank.
Coming back to the storm. It's surprising how things in New Orleans have gone so bad, probably even worst than what happened in Asia after the tsunami last year. Atleast there people weren't shooting at their rescuers. Come to this of it, almost all of the footage coming out of New Orleans shows African American. Are these the poor who couldn't afford to go elsewhere on their own, or just the dumb ones who didn't listen to their mayor when he ordered a full evacuation last week.
There's a lot more to the story than being reported on the big media outlets. But that's mostly all there is, since very few people left their have a connection to the outside world. I for one have been reading 'The Interdictor', a blog of a hosting company who's smack in the middle of it all. It really shows how things are getting pretty crazy, like the 30 or so Police Officers who've quit the force in the past 3 days, or Police doing some "shopping of their own after kicking out the real looters.
My hope and prayers go to all who've been affected.
