Serenity is cheap entertainment. Not for me, I paid the same $9.50 I paid for "Revenge of the Sith". It's cheap for it's cheesy makeup and sound f/x. I mean black zombies that look a lot less like zombies and more like mimes from the 20s? Come on. But, hey I'm not saying it was a bad movie. I liked it for every penny of it's $39 million production budget. After all rarely ever are space-faring sci-fi movies mashed up with bits from classics like "Hackers" and and "* of the Dead" series. That's pretty Bollywood to me.
May be it is what they say it is, a Star Wars movie with a lot less of the "green screen". But, it's also filled with actors who probably got Cs thru acting school and whom most people haven't heard of. Not even one big name. Oh, and no aliens. Because unlike "galaxies far far away", this new galaxy of about 30 planets [that humans have inhabited after trashing ol' earth] didn't have any existing life forms. And even with such advance spacecrafts and galactic communication channels humans have been unable to find extra-torrential life forms. That in itself is a big "fuck you" to SETI supporters.
And there's another thing that bothers me. What with all the Asian languages taking over in the future. There's loads of Chinese and Japanese in Serenity, heck, there's even a couple of shots of Arabic and Hindi. Still, everybody speaks NOTHING but English. How fucking convenient. Ok, ok, I get it, before earth blows up, the Asians have taken over world culture. I have only one question with this scenario... what the hell happened to the Hispanics? Why am I being told that I need to learn Spanish if I need to survive in the future? That's bullshit. Oh and before I leave the ethnic differences alone, I'm also stumped at how every race has managed to get their own planet. But when the Hindu planet is nice green rain-foresty and the black planet is a barren waste land... I want some answers from the screen writers.
Anyway, the movie was worth the admission ticket. Especially since I've never seen a single episode of Firefly. Too bad "Flight Plan" made more money over the weekend.
