J.J. Abrams' Movie - Codename: Cloverfield

So after being denied tickets to Transformers twice for various reasons, I finally managed to see the movie last night. It was great, but there was something shown right before it began that stayed with me through the movie, causing confusion and imense interest in googling what this preview, which simply ended with "Produced by J.J. Abrams, Coming: 1-18-08", was all about.

I could have simply used the Opera Mini 4 Beta on my P850 (take that iPhone) right there, but I can't diss Transformers like that. So after some research I found this page and this Wikipedia entry.

So what the hell is it?

The preview is truly mind blowing. What makes it different is the shot-on-a-camcorder video quality, and yes I know about that other movie that was shot similarly. Before I begin to give my 2 cents, I would like to point out Is J.J. Abrams movie about Voltron? that I might be 100% wrong. My main hunch came from a comment on the firstshowing.net entry, mentioning a Voltron action figure shown in J.J. Abrams' Lost. So why Voltron? Well, at one point during the sneak-sneak preview, some one yells something to effect of "I can see it; It's huge; It's a lion!" If any of you remember Voltron, the mecha robot had a giant lion's heads in place of all appendages and a humanoid robot head inside a inside a helmet shaped liked... a lion's head. So there you go. But why would Voltron, the "defender of the Universe" decide to wreak havoc in NYC and kill innocent little humans? Well, it might be that Voltron was dragged in to a fight to Earth by any one of his villainous enemies, and it's not actually him causing the destruction.

Finally, if this is indeed true, it would make sense to show this preview before Transformers, where another set of Robots have brought their war to our planet. But won't that make these two movies way to similar? Sans the destruction of the Statue of Liberty, of course!

What if it's not Voltron?

Or is a new breed of monsters? To be honest, that's what I am personally hoping for. The world really needs a new type of monster. NYC has seen enough of that radioactive over-sized lizard. We need a new monster species, one that perhaps has always been in midst, right under our feet... hundred of miles underneath, a species that breaths fire and lives in molten magma. Now that's a whole another idea, not that something like it wasn't done recently (see Surface).

So braze yourself for fire-breathing magma-dwelling robot lions... go Abrams!
