The word Islam comes from Arabic triliteral root SLM, "submission" or "surrender," as well as "peace". The religion was initiated by Mohammad (pbuh), the son of an influential tribal leader from Mecca, the then capital of a mostly bediun Arabian penninsula in 768 A.D.

Since then the faith has grown to over a billion worshippers today. Although the reason for it's popularity in the past are controvertial, they are beyond the scope of this article and will not be discussed. This articles deals with the current issues facing Islam, and my own views on how to bring Islam out of the mess it currently is in.
